About Lyn

Lyn Belisle is a multidisciplinary artist embracing encaustic painting, earthenware, digital imagery, sculpture, textiles and found objects. Her artwork gives expression to her quest to discover and connect synchronistic shards of meaning through collage and assemblage.

Lyn received her MA from Trinity University where she majored in studio art as an undergraduate.  She teaches mixed-media workshops at Lyn Belisle Studio in San Antonio, and also teaches nationally and internationally, most recently in Santa Fe, Provincetown, Washington State, Taos, and Mulranny, Ireland.

An advocate for the encaustic arts, she is Vice-President of the International Encaustic Artists and Co-Editor of Wax Fusion magazine. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in the most recent IEA exhibition, When in Rome.

She recently retired from the faculty in the Computer Science Department at Trinity to work full time at her studio. Her signature media are earthenware, beeswax, paper and fiber. She has worked at The Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe and in the San Antonio Art League & Museum. Lyn has had six one-person gallery exhibits since 2011. She currently serves as the President of the San Antonio Art League.

"Encaustic is more than a medium to me—it is a conversation between past and present, between layers of history and the immediacy of creative intuition. The fluidity of wax allows for endless possibilities, from translucent veils that reveal hidden narratives to bold textures that invite tactile exploration. I am drawn to encaustic’s ability to merge painting, collage, and assemblage into a single, luminous surface, where every layer holds a story. The process itself—melting, fusing, and building—mirrors the way I work intuitively, allowing each piece to evolve organically. Encaustic is both an ancient art form and a contemporary means of expression, offering a depth and dimension that continually inspires my exploration of myth, memory, and meaning."

Synthography & Encaustic: A Fusion of Digital Alchemy and Wax

Synthography is a revolutionary fusion of human imagination and AI-assisted image generation, offering artists a new way to explore and expand their visual narratives. When integrated with encaustic art and encaustic collage, synthographic images take on a rich, tactile dimension, veiled beneath layers of luminous wax.

The fluidity and depth of encaustic medium transform the crisp, digital origins of synthographic compositions into something ethereal—melding ancient techniques with contemporary innovation. The heat-fused layers of wax soften and obscure sharp details, inviting mystery, texture, and an organic quality that challenges the distinction between the digital and the handmade.

By embedding synthographic imagery into encaustic surfaces, artists create surreal, dreamlike works that feel both timeless and otherworldly, offering a bridge between technology and tradition, between the ephemeral and the enduring.

Ink & Wax: The Art of Sumi-e and Encaustic Fusion

Experience the harmony of two ancient artistic traditions in this hands-on mini-workshop for Painting with Fire, blending the fluid elegance of Sumi-e painting with the luminous depth of encaustic wax. In the first phase, participants will learn the meditative brush techniques of Sumi-e, painting expressive bamboo and leaves with India ink on paper. Then, in the second phase, we will transform our paintings with encaustic medium, adding layers of translucent wax, incised details, walnut ink washes, delicate patches of gold leaf, and a final red "chop" for a signature touch. This fusion of ink and wax creates an ethereal, textural effect that enhances both the spontaneity of brushwork and the richness of layered surfaces. No prior experience in Sumi-e or encaustic is necessary—just a spirit of exploration!
