Flo Bartell

About Flo

During my childhood, encouraged by my family of artists, artisans, and musicians, I followed my many creative urges. I enjoyed experimenting with material I found in my backyard, around the house, and in my mother's sewing basket. At age ten I began private art lessons that shaped my identity as a maker and artist.

Though my passion for art continued, I followed other educational and career paths. I worked as a teacher, school counselor, and therapist. And then in mid life, I decided to focus again on my need to create. I opened a needlework business and studied art again. During those years I taught quilting, embroidery, knitting, and other needle arts.

Since my mid life shift, I've maintained an active studio practice that spans more than thirty five years. For almost two decades, I have worked primarily in encaustic. My passion is creating dimensional paintings and sculpture, satisfying my "maker" needs on many levels as I combine wax with fabric, paper, wire, and other found material. I teach encaustic painting and sculpture in my home studio.
